There are three parts to participating in the study:
In the first phase, we ask that your child’s primary caregiver and one school teacher to fill out questionnaires and return them to us by mail. Teachers will be paid $5 for their time. If your child is not eligible to participate after the questionnaire phase, you will be paid $10 for your time.
If your child is eligible to participate, then we would schedule the first of two 3-hour on-campus visits for you and your child during a weekday evening (Monday-Thursday) or a Saturday, whichever works better for you.
During the on-campus visit, your child will be playing games, brain teasers, working on a computer, and doing things they learned in school like reading, writing, and math problems. You will be completing an interview with one of our study staff, and filling out questionnaires about your child’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. If you are not eligible to continue after this visit, or decide you don’t want to continue, you will be paid a total of $30 for your time.
If, after the first visit, you and your child are still a good match for our research study, then you will be invited for a second on-campus visit (lasting ~3 hours). If you complete both of the 3-hour visits, you will be paid a total of $100. Someone will call you afterwards to give you feedback on your child’s performance.
If you are not eligible to participate, but remain concerned about your child social, emotional, or academic health, the Psychological Clinic at Penn State provides comprehensive therapeutic as well as psychological and neuropsychological evaluations. These services may also be obtained elsewhere locally; please check with your insurance provider.
